Newton’s Public Works Department will have an additional 629 tons of road salt to put down on City Streets this winter. The City Council this week approved purchasing that amount from Central Salt of Lyons, Kansas, to fill the salt storage building. The cost was $45,438.87, or $72.21 per ton. City staff says the Public Works salt storage building provides adequate storage so winter road salt can be purchased at pre-season prices, which are typically about $25/ton less than in-season prices.
