The Indiana Township Fire Department was dispatched to a structure fire Thursday night at around 9:30 at the intersection of County Highway G76 and 132nd Street. While en route to the fire, mutual aid was requested from Columbia and Melcher-Dallas for tender trucks. Upon arrival, crews found a large hoop building with square bales of hay inside as well as another piece of equipment. Once the flames were knocked down, several farmers with tractors and grapple buckets removed the hay from the structure while firefighters protected their machines. The cause of the fire is still unknown, but early indications point to spontaneous combustion of the hay. The Indiana Township Fire Department was assisted by the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, Melcher-Dallas Fire Department, and Columbia Fire Department.
