Suspected credit card skimming devices have been found at a Newton Gas Station. Newton Police Captain Chris Wing says two suspected Bluetooth skimming devices were found on pumps Tuesday, August 27th at the Git & Go Station at 801 1st Avenue West. He notes the skimmers might have been in place since late July, and over half a dozen possible victims have already been identified.
“If you have been to Git & Go, my advice is to monitor your account on a regular basis–referably daily. If you notice any unauthorized activity, notify your bank or financial institution immediately. If you suspect it’s associated with these skimmers give us a call so we can file a report on it also.”
Captain Wing adds tapping a chipped credit card on a card reader is much safer than inserting or swiping your credit card.
“Whenever you have to swipe your card, that’s when they are getting that information. If you use a mobile wallet or the tap, those use a one time electronic token that the bank authorizes. So they don’t get the information for your bank account that they can use later.”
With the help of the Iowa Department of Agriculture, the Newton Police Department’s investigation is continuing and the affected pumps have been taken out of service.
