The Newton Volleyball team won two of three matches and four of six sets during the Cardinal Early Bird Invitational last night at Newton High School. The Cardinals downed Saydel in straight sets 21-6 and 21-10. Newton then won another match in two identical sets, defeating Des Moines Hoover 21-3 and 21-3. The Cardinals ended the night falling to PCM in two sets 21-15 and 21-13. Delany Woollums led Newton in kills with 15. Isabelle Rawlins was the team leader in assists with 22. Chloe Swank was tops in digs with 25, while Macy Lampe and Sloan Brodersen tied for the team lead in aces with seven apiece. Newton Volleyball travels for the first time this season Thursday to play at the Lynnville-Sully Invitational. Matches at Lynnville-Sully High School begin at 5 p.m., Newton will get a rematch with PCM, and also play host Lynnville-Sully and Twin Cedars.
