Central Women’s Soccer Shuts Out Wisconsin-Whitewater

After a scoreless first half, the Central women’s soccer team scored 3 goals in the second half to start the season off with a 3-0 over Wisconsin-Whitewater.

The Dutch (1-0-0) got a goal from last season’s leading scorer Grace Coates in the 55th minute to take the lead 1-0. Central went up 2-0 in the 77th minute after the Warhawks let in an own goal, before Coates scored again on an assist from Kelley Duffy in the 87th minute. Goalkeeper Zoey Sizemore, who played the entire game and recorded 4 saves without allowing a goal. Defender Addison Brown also recorded an assist on Coates’ first goal of the game.

The Central women’s soccer team has a quick turnaround, hitting the road on Sunday to play North Park (Ill.) at 4 pm.

Central Men’s Soccer Team Falls in Season Opener

Opening the season against Macalester, the Central men’s soccer team was shutout 2-0 Friday night.

After a scoreless first half for both teams, the Dutch (0-1-0) conceded a goal in the 69th minute, followed up by giving up another goal in the 80th minute. Midfielder Teddy Apostolopoulous led the squad with 2 shots on goal in his first career start. Goalkeeper Ronan Murphy battled in goal, recording two saves.

The Central men’s soccer team returns to the pitch at the A.N. Kuyper Athletic Complex soccer field against Westminster (Mo.) at 2 p.m. on Monday.

Central Opens Volleyball Season with a Split

Opening its 2024 season with a pair of matches at its home tournament Friday, the Central volleyball team lost to Bethany Lutheran College (Minn.) in three sets before sweeping the College of St. Scholastica (Minn.). 

The Dutch (1-1) struggled to find their offense in the opener, with just 30 kills to 27 attack errors (.025 percentage). In the second-match victory, Central put down 40 kills with a .274 hitting percentage. In the win, Paige Sexton and Landry Pacha led the way with 10 and nine kills, respectively. Gracie Pierson also had eight. Libero Colleen Kenney had 18 digs to go with her five service aces against the Saints. Avery Rexroat had a team-high 20 assists.

Central has two more matches tomorrow at the Central-Grinnell Invitational, starting with a noon contest against Fontbonne University (Mo.).
