Newton High School had three fall sports teams in action on Tuesday night The boys and girls cross country teams traveled to Williamsburg, where the boys placed 4th out of 13 teams. Junior Lance Zabel led the way for the Cardinal boys finishing 13th with a time of 18:00.6. The Newton girls cross country team finished 6th in the meet, with a score of 171. The top finisher for the Cardinal girls was freshman Audrey Muckler with a time of 21:40.9. Both Cross Country teams will next run on Tuesday September 10th at Ahrens Park in Grinnell. Newton’s Volleyball team opened Little Hawkeye Conference play Tuesday, falling at home in four sets to Dallas Center-Grimes. The Cardinals lost the first two sets 25-18 and 25-13, but rallied to win the third set 25-21, before dropping the fourth set 25-22. Delaney Woollums had 19 Kills, 15 Digs, and 2 Aces. Macy Lampe 12 kills, 8 Digs, and 3 Aces. Isabelle Rawlins 36 Assists, 12 Digs, 2 Aces. The Cardinals volleyball team dropped to 5-2 overall on the season and 0-1 in conference play. Newton’s volleyball team will look to get back in the win column on Thursday, hosting North Polk and Grand View Christian in a triangular at 5 p.m. The Newton Colfax-Mingo Pella Aquagirls capped off the night by going 2-0 in a triangular, beating Marshalltown 55-36 and Fort Dodge 53.5-30.5 in Marshalltown. The Aquagirls will next compete against Grinnell and Indianola at Grinnell College on Thursday at 7 p.m.
