A dominant first quarter was more than enough for the PCM football team to power past Pella Christian in the Highway 163 rivalry Friday night, as they cruised to a 59-7 victory heard live on 92.1 KRLS.
The Mustangs received the opening kick-off and wasted no time jumping out to a big advantage. PCM scored rushing touchdowns on all six of their possessions in the first quarter, with Gavin Van Gorp scoring three times, Adrian Robbins adding two scores, and Evan Jones capping off the quarter with a touchdown. After building up a 41-0 first quarter lead, Robbins added his third rushing touchdown of the night in the second quarter to give the Mustangs a 47-0 advantage heading into halftime. PCM added two more scores in the third quarter, with Chase Wagaman’s touchdown pass to Cutler Vandelune and a Shay Burns’ rushing touchdown. Pella Christian’s first touchdown of the season separated the Mustangs’ scores in the third quarter, as Garrett Wielard found Camden Parker for a 74-yard touchdown pass.
In addition to his three rushing touchdowns, Robbins posted 142 yards on nine rushing attempts for the Mustangs, while Van Gorp supplemented his three rushing scores with 15 yards rushing on six carries and 96 passing yards on eight completions. In his first career start at quarterback for the Eagles, Wielard threw for 92 yards on six completions, while Theo Hugen was the leading rusher with 21 yards on four carries.
PCM improved to 2-0 overall on the year, while the Eagles dropped to 0-2 on the young season. The Mustangs are back at home next Friday to square off with Nevada, while Pella Christian returns home to host Grundy Center next week.
