A Des Moines woman is in custody for the overdose death of a Newton woman over a year ago. Newton Police have charged 26 year old Taylor Elizabeth Ann Nelson with delivery of a controlled substance under five grams of heroin, a Class C Felony. On July 9th, 2023, the Newton Police Department started an investigation into the overdose death of 25 year old Kristen Nichole Ewing at her home on 1st Avenue East. At the scene, officers reported finding numerous items of drug paraphernalia along with three rocks of a brown substance, which, according to the police report, weighed .2 grams and tested positive for fentanyl at the State DCI lab. Court documents state Facebook Messenger messages connected Nelson to selling Ewing one gram of heroin for $200 dollars at a nail salon in Des Moines two days before Ewing’s death. In another such message, Newton Police claim Nelson admits Ewing’s death was her fault. Nelson is currently being held without bond in the Polk County Jail on unrelated charges. The Newton Police Department was assisted in this investigation by the Mid-Iowa Narcotics Drug Task Force and the Jasper County Attorney’s Office. The case remains under investigation.
