The Newton football team used a quick strike early and then long scoring drives to beat Norwalk in the Warriors Homecoming game 29-21 in a game heard live on KNIAKRLS.com Friday night .

After winning the coin toss and receiving the opening kick-off, the Cardinals connected for a 68 yard score as Quarterback Caden Klein connected with Rielly Trease on a screen pass to give Newton the early 7-0 advantage. Newton  proceeded to have two more scoring drives in the first half consisting of 13 plays and 82 yards and 10 plays covering 76 yards to take a 20-14 lead into halftime. Caden Klein and Isaiah Hansen provided the two rushing scores before the intermission. Newton’s final touchdown came on a Sklyer Milheiser one-yard run, capping off an 11 play, 70 yard drive. Jackson Price added a 25-yard field goal with 2:00 left in the game to punctuate the victory for the Cardinals . Newton head coach Andy Swedenhjelm says many Cardinal players were looking to beat Norwalk after the Warriors came from behind and won at H.A. Lynn Stadium last year.

“We kind of felt we had last year’s game in control and they did some great things in the second half and got it. So there was a lot of motivation for this one and we feel like this was a great step for us the rest of the season.”

The Cardinals improved to 2-1 overall on the season, and return home next Friday night for their Homecoming game against Marshalltown..
