October 14th is the bid opening date for the next phase of work on the new clubhouse at Newton’s City Golf Course. Last night, Newton City Council members set that date during their regularly scheduled meeting. The bids that will be opened are for interior work on the new clubhouse at Westwood Golf Course. Previous work on the project has included asbestos abatement, demolition, site grading, utilities, and exterior improvements. All have been completed or awarded. This contract will cover the remaining interior improvements including mechanical, HVAC, plumbing, finished floors, and interior walls. City staff says the plans and specifications were prepared by design and engineering firm ISG in Des Moines. A public hearing and action on awarding the contract is scheduled for the regular October 21st Newton City Council meeting. The estimated construction cost is $500,000, which will be paid from American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) Funds. Last night, the Newton City Council also approved the golf course’s fees for 2025. Monday through Thursday green fees have been set at $15 for 9 holes and $19 for 18 holes. Weekend green fees on Friday through Sunday are $17 for 9 holes and $24 for 18 holes. Cart rental any day of the week is $10 for 9 holes and $16 for 18 holes. The City Council also kept the 5% discount for Newton residents on Punch and Season Passes.
