The Norwalk volleyball and cross country teams competed on Tuesday, capped by the volleyball team’s three-game sweep of Newton.

The Class 4A 9th-ranked Warriors defeated the Cardinals in three lopsided sets, winning 25-6, 25-14, 25-16. They improved to 12-6 overall and 2-1 in Little Hawkeye Conference play. Newton is now 5-6 overall and 0-3 in the conference.

Unofficially, freshman Elle Hatlevig led Norwalk with 15 kills and junior Jillian Hammond had an extremely efficient night at the net with 11 kills on 14 swings and no errors. Head coach John Fulton called it a great all-around game, noting that the Warriors did a fantastic job of putting service pressure on the Cardinals throughout the match.

Norwalk will compete in the Waukee Invitational on Saturday.

Cross Country

The Norwalk cross country teams ran in West Des Moines Valley’s Tom Karpen Invite on Tuesday. The Warrior girls placed third out of four teams with a score of 73 and the boys finished sixth out of 10 teams with a 139. Team champions on the day were the Ankeny Centennial girls and the Valley boys.

Four Norwalk girls placed in the top 20 individually, led by freshman Olive DeRocher’s sixth-place time of 21 minutes, 9 seconds. Freshman Gabby Drymon placed 12th, junior Pearl Brown was 16th and freshman Grace Wetzeler took 20th.

The Warrior boys, who rested their normal varsity squad, were led by sophomore Sam Buhrow’s 11th-place time of 18:11. Jeremiah Brown finished 19th and AJ Mosqueda was 24th among a field of 74 runners.

The Norwalk harriers travel to Pella on Saturday to compete in the Heartland Classic at Central College. The meet will start at 9:00 a.m.
