A quick strike first half offense and a dominating defense produced a 35-0 Homecoming win for the Newton Cardinals last night. On the second play of the game Reilly Trease scored on a 66 yard run. Newton’s next drive after an interception ended with an 8 yard touchdown run by Quarterback Caden Klein. Klein was 2 for 4 passing for 128 yards, Both passes went for second quarter touchdowns. 80 yards to Cade Bauer and 48 yards to Finn Martin. Newton also got a 2nd quarter safety by tackling the Bobcat Punter in the end zone after a low snap. Isaiah Hansen ended the Cardinals scoring with a 57 yard run to the end zone. Unofficially, Newton’s offense was well over 400 yards, while Marshalltown was held to less than 30. Newton Coach Andy Swedenhjelm is very proud of his defense.
“They do a great job and fly around. I hope Newton has a great tradition of tough, physical, hard working teams. Our goal is to uphold that tradition, and I think our defense does a fantastic job of that.”
Newton ends non-district play 3-1, and travels to Bondurant (0-4) next Friday night for a game that can be heard live on kniakrls.com KRLS3. Marshalltown (0-4), shutout for the first time since last year’s 45-0 loss at home to Newton, will look for their first win next Friday night at home against Ottumwa.
