The Helping Hand Run & Jam 5K was held on Saturday in Indianola.
The event was held to raise money and awareness for food insecurity in Warren County. All profits from the race will benefit The Helping Hand of Warren County, Indianola’s local food pantry. 62 runners participated in the 5K, and the event raised $1,448. Additionally, the Helping Hand Run & Jam gathered 88 non-perishable food items, 57 pieces of clothing and bedding, and 15.5 lbs. of meat for the food pantry. Brandon Barkey, one of the event’s organizers, said they were grateful for the community’s support and a great turnout for the race.
“We were very happy with how many people were so willing to not only just sign up, but also donate. We were also just so proud to see how much the community wanted to help. We thought that we were going to kind of be in this alone and we were going to struggle to put on something even half as large, and we’re really happy to see that not only members of the community but also companies and local shops were wanting to donate their time or donate their resources to help us out.”
The KNIA/KRLS Lil’ Big Red Radio was in attendance, playing music throughout the event.
