Another street improvement project in Newton is officially complete. The Newton City Council has accepted a Public Works Department recommendation to release the last payment for the West 6th Street South Widening and Overlay Project. This past March, a $217,409.26 bid for the three block project was approved by council members. West 6th Street South between South 9th Avenue West and South 11th Avenue West was 21 feet wide, in poor condition, had no curb and gutters, and had poor drainage. City staff said the narrow width created a traffic hazard, while the poor drainage increased flooding in the area. Improvements included widening the street to 25 feet with the addition of curb and gutters, overlaying the pavement, infilling missing sidewalks, and reconstructing non-compliant sidewalk ramps. Manatt’s Incorporated of Brooklyn, Iowa did the improvements. Based on one change order and actual measured quantities of work, the final cost was $282,420,66.
