A Newton man has been given a five year prison sentence for assaulting his live-in girlfriend in early July. District court records show Judge Steven Holwerda imposed the prison term and a $1,025 civil penalty on 27-year-old Marshondous Washington. A restitution hearing in the case is set for October 15th. Washington pleaded guilty to Domestic Assault Impeding Air Flow, a Class D felony. Two other Class D felony charges related to the injuries sustained by his girlfriend were dismissed as part of a plea agreement. The criminal complaint filed by Newton Police accused Washington of breaking his girlfriend’s cheekbone by throwing her against the wall several times, and hitting her in the head and neck area multiple times. This reportedly occurred between July 5th and 7th of this year. The victim also told officers she lost consciousness from Washington putting his hands around her neck.
