The facility that has housed animals for the City of Newton for many years is terminating that agreement. During a special Newton City Council meeting yesterday, Newton Police Chief Rob Burdess informed Council members Parkview Animal Hospital has announced they will end the agreement October 15th. By city code, Newton is required to provide animal control services. Chief Burdess noted that requirement involves temporarily housing about 200 dogs per year. He recommended, and the City Council unanimously approved, the purchase of an eight stall commercial kennell from Backyard Escapes of Pocomoke City Maryland for $84,831.
“It’s a 12-by-52 foot unit. They are modular and built by Amish craftsmen in Pennsylvania. They come turn key with all the kennels pre-installed. All the electric, heating and cooling, and plumbing are there. All we have to do is install electricity and water to it.”
Chief Burdess expects the total price of the project to be around $175,000. That will be paid for with bond revenue the city receives next spring. Delivery of the kennell is expected in four-to-six weeks. The Newton City Council still has to select a site for it. Chief Burdess says two or three City owned locations on the edge of Newton, at least 300 feet from any residence, are being considered. He added Parkview Animal Hospital has offered to continue to house animals on a non contractual basis for the City after October 15th at a higher fee.
