The Knoxville School Board discussed free school activity passes for senior citizens who live in the district at their meeting last Monday.
At the meeting, it was stated by Superintendent Cassi Pearson that the policy for free activity passes needed to be revisited because many people are getting into games for free when the original policy stated it was just free for seniors who live in the district. In return, the district is not taking in as much revenue as before and it is hurting the bottom line. It was stated that somewhere along the line the policy moved to all seniors in Marion County and then all seniors in general. It also used to be a policy where these had to be renewed every year, but that hasn’t been the case lately. The board is going to revisit this agenda item at a future meeting to determine what policy they want to set. Pearson says they want seniors to be able to support the kids as much as possible.
“I think the Knoxville School District has been very generous and will continue to be very generous, but anyone who is over the age of 62 that qualifies is able to get an activity pass and come support our athletes, and our performing artist and other activities where there is a gate fee for.”
A resolution is expected to be discussed at the next school board meeting on October 14th.
