Pella Regional Health Center has announced that Heather Van Steenis, BSN, in Emergency is the recipient of the quarterly DAISY Award. The DAISY program is a national award, given at the local level, to registered nurses who exemplify extraordinary nursing. The focus is on the special touches and human consideration these nurses give to their patients.

Excerpt from Heather’s nomination by co-worker, Ashley Albertson:

“Recently, a teenage patient in our Emergency Department needed care, with Heather as her dedicated nurse. As Heather’s shift was ending, we prepared to transfer the patient to a higher-level hospital for advanced treatment. Understandably, the patient felt nervous and scared, despite having her parents by her side. In a remarkable display of compassion, Heather unexpectedly jumped into the ambulance with the patient, riding alongside her to the receiving facility. Later that evening, three hours after her shift had ended, Heather returned to the Emergency Department, showcasing her unwavering commitment to patient care. This selfless act perfectly embodies the spirit of the DAISY Award!”

Van Steenis received a certificate that reads: “In deep appreciation of all you do, who you are, and the incredibly meaningful difference you make in the lives of so many people.” She was also given a sculpture called A Healer’s Touch, hand-carved by artists of the Shona Tribe in Africa.
