A former Jasper County employee accused of stealing over $17,000 of County money over 11 months has entered two guilty pleas. Court documents show 31 -year-old Shelby Hobbs pleaded guilty Monday to a Class D felony Forgery charge and to First Degree Theft over $10,000, a Class C felony. Hobbs worked as the office coordinator for the Jasper County Community Development Department. According to the criminal complaint filed by the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department, she wrote 42 checks to herself from the Department’s checkbook and signed her Supervisor’s name on the checks. This reportedly occurred from August of last year through this past March. Court documents state the forged checks totaled $17, 458. The Sheriff’s Office claims all the checks were either cashed or deposited into Hobbs’ personal bank account. The Newton woman was arrested July 10th and authorities said she admitted to the theft right away. District Court Judge Brad McCall accepted Hobbs’ two guilty pleas and set her sentencing hearing for November 25th. Hobbs was originally charged with ten other Class D felony Forgery Counts.
