The Newton City Council has approved an Electrical Service Contract that’s intended to help fix problems with some of the city’s outdoor warning sirens. Van Maanen Electric in Newton will install electrical services to four of the existing nine outdoor warning sirens. The four being fixed are solar-powered, 130-decibel rotating sirens. City staff say these warning sirens have sometimes malfunctioned because the solar charger battery has not been charged. New DC-powered rotating sirens will be installed at these four locations. But overhead electrical services need to be provided; that’s what Van Maanen Electric will provide for $11,008. The total amount of general fund bond revenue set aside for the replacement of the four solar-powered outdoor warning sirens is $50,000.
