The Newton Police Department is cautioning residents of potential interruptions or limited animal control services until a new modular kennel purchased by the City is fully operational. Newton Community Marketing Manager Danielle Rogers says the Police Department’s partnership with Parkview Animal Hospital will end this coming Tuesday. In order to continue housing stray animals, the City is transitioning to a new City-operated kennel at 707 West 9th Street North. At the recommendation of Police Chief Rob Burdess, the Newton City Council approved the purchase of an $84,831 eight stall commercial modular kennel from Backyard Escapes of Pocomoke City, Maryland. Rogers says its placement on the City’s lot with the required infrastructure is expected to be completed later this fall. Until then, Parkview Animal Hospital will provide the City limited, non-contractual animal housing services through the end of this year. The City operated kennel will be overseen by Newton’s Community Service Officers in the Code Enforcement Division. Rogers adds inspection and licensing for the facility will be conducted by the Iowa Department of Agriculture and a licensed veterinarian. She also notes stray dogs picked up by the Newton Police Department will continue to be posted on the City website at www.newtongov.org/straypets.
