The Newton volleyball team went 1-1 in their home triangular against Des Moines North and Williamsburg on Thursday night. The Cardinals defeated Des Moines North in identical straight sets 25-12, 25-12. Isabelle Rawlins led the Cardinals with 22 assists, while Chloe Swank added 11 digs and Delaney Woollums 11 kills. In their second match, Newton was swept by Williamsburg 25-22, 25-22. Against the Raiders, Rawlins had 20 assists, Swank had 17 digs, and Woollums posted 11 kills. Swank reached 1,000 career digs in the first set against Williamsburg and now has 1,016 in her career. Newton now holds an 11-13 record on the season. The Cardinals return to action Tuesday, when they visit Class 4A #6 Pella at 7:15 pm.
The Newton boys and girls cross country teams participated in the Fort Dodge Invitational on Thursday, with the boys placing 22nd out of 28 teams and the girls finishing 20th out of 25 schools. Sophomore Cooper Lenz paced the Cardinal boys in the meet, placing 66th with a time of 16:59.1. Freshman Audrey Muckler led the way for the Newton girls in the meet, finishing 50th with a time of 20:22.2. The Cardinals cross country teams will have the weekend off, before hosting the Little Hawkeye Conference at Maytag Park on Monday.
