Norwalk senior Grady Sigrist will compete in the Class 4A Boys State Golf Tournament, set for Monday and Tuesday at Ankeny’s Briarwood Golf Club. Sigrist will play 18 holes each day, with competition beginning at 10:30 a.m. on Monday and 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday.

The 4A state meet field will feature 12 teams and eight individuals. Sigrist qualified for state after placing sixth with a score of 73 in last week’s District Tournament at Willow Creek. He was one of two individual state qualifiers from the meet who were not members of state-qualifying teams.

Sigrist tells KNIA/KRLS Sports that he is going to enjoy the experience of competing at state in his final high school golf meet, but he is also looking to perform well. Sigrist says that if you can drive the ball with accuracy at Briarwood, you can post a good score.

“The par 5’s are really gettable. You can make a lot of birdies,” he said. “I know I can make birdies out there. I’ve just got to keep the big numbers off the card for me to ultimately place well and maybe win a state championship.”

This will be Sigrist’s first time competing at State Golf. He enters the meet ranked 18th individually in Class 4A.

Norwalk Cross Country at Conference Meet

The Norwalk cross country teams will be in Newton for Monday’s Little Hawkeye Conference Meet at Maytag Park. The girls varsity race is scheduled to start at 4:50 p.m., followed by the boys race at 5:15.

The Warrior boys, who were ninth in last week’s IATC Class 4A state rankings, will be seeking to reclaim the Little Hawkeye title after placing second to Pella last year. The Warriors won the three previous LHC championships. The Norwalk girls will look to move up a spot or two after placing fifth in last year’s conference meet.
