The Simpson football team got out to an early lead and nearly saw it slip away Saturday as the Storm took down Nebraska Wesleyan 21-14 on homecoming as heard live on 94.3 KNIA.
The Storm scored on their first drive with quarterback J Jensen finding Cole Staska from 22-yards out to lead 7-0, only to see the Prairie Wolves answer early in the second quarter to tie the score at 7-all. The Storm scored twice more in the second quarter, with Jensen hitting Jay Romelus on a slant for a 71-yard score, and Demarico Young finding the endzone from a yard out on a rush to lead 21-7 at the halftime break. The Storm offense would sputter in a penalty filled second half, with Nebraska Wesleyan scoring in the fourth quarter to get the game back within seven points, but Simpson would drive down the field and run out the clock for the win.
Head coach Reed Hoskins tells KNIA Sports it was great to see the support from the community on homecoming, and while the penalties need to be cleaned up, a win is a win.
Jensen had 348 yards through the air and two scores, and Romelus had 134 yards receiving and the touchdown. Simpson improves to 3-3 on the season, and has a tough matchup on the road at Wartburg on Saturday.
