Jasper County Treasurer Doug Bishop says his Office is the third busiest County Operated Driver’s License Station in the state, and the only office in the state that offers regular Saturday hours. Those hours are from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. on the second Saturday of each month. Last year, Bishop says they issued driver’s licenses to drivers from at least 11 other counties; that’s extra money for Jasper County.

“The State gives us $7.00 per card. But a couple of years ago a bill passed by the State Legislature allows us to charge anyone who comes in from outside Jasper County a $10.00 surcharge. So that is revenue that is brought in from outside the county.”

Bishop notes the $10.00 surcharge isn’t a deterrent to Polk County drivers especially. He says about 85 percent of the out of County licenses go to Polk County residents who otherwise would go to the licensing station in Ankeny.
