Severe Thunderstorm Warning issued on 10/24/24

A series of scattered thunderstorms brought much-needed rainfall and a few severe thunderstorm warnings to the region Thursday evening. The KNIA/KRLS Severe Weather Action Team was on the air for two different instances, including just before 6 p.m. and again at around 8:45 p.m. as small hail was reported in multiple communities, and some cases — including in Pella, multiple times throughout the event. The warnings impacted portions of Marion, Warren, and Jasper Counties. Many local rain gauges received between a 1/4″ and 1/2″ of rainfall through the duration of Thursday’s storms:

Pella – .58″
Knoxville – .34″
Lake Red Rock – .44″
Newton – .31″
Ackworth – .25″
Indianola – .09″

This comes as all of Marion and Warren Counties, and the southern half of Jasper County remain abnormally dry and the rest of the state has settled into at least moderate drought after a lack of consistent precipitation throughout the vast majority of the fall season.

Dry, mild conditions are in the forecast through Sunday, according to the National Weather Service, before a warmer trend returns early next week. The next best chance for rainfall is next Wednesday.

The KNIA/KRLS Severe Weather Action Team is on the air for any severe thunderstorm or tornado warning for the three counties covered by the station.
