Work on the West 8th Street North bridge in Newton has officially been completed at a cost exceeding the original bid by over $10,000. Newton City Administrator Matt Muckler says the project included reconstructing the north and south bridge approaches, the adjacent sidewalks, and installation of subdrains. The bridge spanning the Iowa Interstate Railroad was built in 1981. In mid-June, the Newton City Council awarded a work contract to OEL Construction Services Incorporated of Steamboat Rock Iowa. Their low bid was $161,329. After the issuance of two change orders, Muckler says the final project cost is $172,827. The City Council this week passed a resolution declaring the project was completed.
