A Newton resident has been injured in what became a three-vehicle crash in Newton Sunday evening. The Iowa State Patrol reports 23-year-old Harley Howe was riding a Suzuki motorcycle and in the eastbound lane of 1st Avenue East, along with a Cadillac CT4 operated by 40-year-old Ryan Smith, also from Newton. The report indicates a 2023 Ford Explorer driven by 67-year-old Randall Gunsaulus of Newton crossed the road from a business drive near the intersection of East 17th Street. Both Howe and Smith attempted to take evasive action, and both collided with the Explorer. Howe was thrown from the motorcycle on impact. The Iowa State Patrol reports Howe was not wearing a helmet and suffered injuries that required helicopter transportation to Mercy Des Moines.
