The three block reconstruction on West 4th Street South in Newton cost the City $1,053,311. Newton Public Works Director Joe Grife says three change orders for the work between South 2nd Avenue West and South 5th Avenue West pushed the cost well above the original $981,423 bid. The low bid from Manatt’s Incorporated of Brooklyn, Iowa was accepted by the Newton City Council back in February. Grife says the project is now officially completed, with the three block section reconstructed to 31 feet wide with a new water main, ADA compliant curb ramps, and storm sewer installed. According to Grife, this section of West 4th Street South had not been resurfaced since 2009.
