Newton Mayor Evelyn George says a site south of the Newton Sanitary landfill has been eliminated as a possible location for the new city owned dog kennel. The Mayor said that zoning issues forced the location at 3985 West 8th Street South to be removed from consideration. This is the third location the Newton Police Department has proposed for the modular eight stall dog kennel. The first site at 707 West 9th Street South was rejected by the City Council due to neighborhood complaints about possible noise and zoning challenges. The second proposed location at 3387 Highway F48 West, south of the current dog park and near Westwood Golf Course, wasn’t approved because of concerns about aesthetics, proximity to neighbors, and taking up land that could be used for expansion of the golf course parking lot. Parkview Animal Hospital in Newton terminated a longstanding animal control agreement with the city on October 15th, but has agreed to provide non-contractual animal control services through the end of this year at a higher cost. Mayor George says finding a kennel site is a high priority, due to the community potentially being without animal control services come January.
