The Pella School Board toured a facility nearing completion before meeting on Monday. The board returned to the new Jefferson/Middle School connector project before regular business started. Students are expected to move into the new space in early January. Following the tour, the board approved contract completion with Hilsabeck Schacht, Inc. for the Early Childhood center and a student trip to NASA. A review of the school district’s financial position followed, which included the timeline for approval. The board is expected to make another $800,000 in cuts — approximately double of previous projections, due to increased operation costs at the Early Childhood Center, rolling off of the state’s budget guarantee due to another year of decreased enrollment, and other previously unexpected changes. This will likely result in the reduction of staff positions now, according to Superintendent Greg Ebeling, and the process to make those cuts will carry into January, when a final decision is made.
