PCM Head Football Coach Greg Bonnett is eyeing his second state football title as head coach of the Mustangs.
Bonnett won his last state title with PCM in 2018 and has had the Mustangs in the playoffs all 14 years that he has been a head coach. It’s hard to describe the PCM football team this year in any other word than domination. The Mustangs are a perfect 11-0 this season and have essentially breezed through nearly every game on their schedule. PCM’s closest margin of victory this season has been 22 points and they have outscored their opponents all season by a substantial margin. If you have seen PCM play this season they look like a well oiled machine and the way they play and are coached is next to none.
PCM has one of the best running backs in the state, a dual threat starting quarterback with three years experience, an offensive line that man handles their opponents each week and creates ocean sized holes, an experienced defense that has shut down opposing teams each week, and also an effective kicker. From the outside looking in, it is hard to find many flaws with this year’s PCM team, and some would compare it to the 2018 state champion team. However, the Mustangs have two games to win if they want to hoist that trophy again and be kings of the state. Bonnett tells KNIA/KRLS they didn’t want to just make it to the dome, they want to win the whole thing.
“It’s been a fun year anyway, and what they’ve done has been very impressive, but like we’ve been saying all year, we want a little bit more than where we’re at right now. We don’t want to just be a team that goes to the dome, we want to get out of there with a state title.”
Bonnett and the Mustangs will take on Spirit Lake in the Class 2A semifinals at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls on Saturday at 10:00 am. The game can be heard live on 92.1 KRLS.
