The latest updates on the two elementary school renovation and addition projects in Newton are available today on the Newton School District’s website. Newton Superintendent Tom Messenger says the district provides new information about the Aurora Heights and Thomas Jefferson improvements every Friday that follows a regular school board meeting.
“We are also going to try and incorporate pictures along the way so people can see some of the progress. Now is when you can see some of the things being done that have largely just been talked about either through the news or school communication.”
The Aurora Heights and Thomas Jefferson elementary schools are being renovated and expanded to hold up to 500 students each. They will be the only elementary schools open in Newton for the 2026-2027 school year. In October of last year the Newton School Board voted to eventually close the two other elementary buildings, Emerson Hough and Woodrow Wilson, due to years of declining enrollment.
