The 2025 Iowa Pyrotechnic Guild International (PGI) Convention, that was originally scheduled to take place in Newton next summer has landed in Boone. The Iowa Pyrotechnic Guild International’s website says Boone will host the upcoming fireworks convention August 2nd-9th, 2025. PGI claims the convention has an economic impact of $2 million-to-$3 million dollars on the host city. Newton did host the Convention last year, and was scheduled to host again next year. But last week Newton City Councilman Randy Ervin, chair of the PGI Newton Committee, said PGI would probably take the convention to another Iowa city, due to the indecisive response from the landowner where the nightly fireworks were to be discharged. Many residents in northwest Newton had been upset with how close the fireworks were going to be to their homes and apartments, and a recent City council decision to allow city parks on the northwest side of Newton to be used for parking and camping.
