Out of 683 players who hit the floor for a Class 4A volleyball team in Iowa, Pella’s Katie Scheckel was named the best among them.
The Iowa Girls Coaches Association selected the junior as the state’s Class 4A volleyball player of the year. Scheckel tallied 364 kills, 394 digs, and 56 service aces — all ranked in the top ten in 4A. The do-it-all star also had 458 assists and 22 blocks.
Head Coach Joel Allman says Katie matches her talent on the floor with her personality away from it, which enhances the honor. He says “Scheck” is one of the rare players he’s been around that could play any role on the court at an elite level.
“We asked her to do a lot of things coming into this year, and I know that’s a mind-blowing strategy here, but my goal was to get her to touch the ball as much as possible,” He said. “We made some little adjustments from last year as far as getting her in serve-receive a little bit more and she was second in attempts, and she started out [sets] serving for us for a reason that got her setting to start with, and then obviously when she rotated the front row she’s very special as a hitter too. Our goal was to try to get her to touch the ball as much as possible and then kind of go from there.”
Katie led Pella to the state finals for the second time in school history.
