The Newton Girls Wrestling team opened the season Tuesday night with a third place finish at the Sigourney Keota Girls Wrestling Tournament. The Cardinals accumulated 105 points throughout the evening, finishing behind West Liberty in second with 123.5 points. Isabel Talley of Newton won all three of her matches and placed first at 235 pounds. Ashlyn Van Manen went 2-1 at 190 pounds and finished second. Also placing second for the Cardinals was Stella Cupples, who went 2-1 at 115 pounds. At 125 pounds, Alivia Conley went 2-1 and placed third, while Johana Cerna also took third by winning two of her three matches at 140 pounds. Kamiya Lepley took fourth place for the Cardinals at 155 pounds, while Grace Guy placed fifth at 170 pounds. The Newton Girls Wrestling team will not compete again until December 16th, when wrestlers from over 20 schools take part in the Saydel Girls Wrestling Invitational at Saydel High School.
