The Pella Christian girls basketball team kicks off the winter season on Eagle Lane this afternoon, hosting Davis County in the season opener.
The Eagles return a wealth of experience from last year’s team, bringing back five girls that started games last season. The Mustangs also have a majority of last season’s team back this winter, with five girls that played in all 23 of their games returning to the court. Among the key returners for Davis County are juniors Halle Husted and Culee Smith. Husted was the Mustangs third leading scorer a year ago, averaging 6.6 points per game, while Smith wasn’t far behind with 5.7 points per game. This is the second consecutive season Pella Christian and Davis County have opened the year against one another, but just the third overall meeting between the schools in the Bound era. Competing on the road a year ago, the Eagles picked up a 67-52 victory over the Mustangs. Pella Christian won the only other matchup in the series, defeating Davis County 56-47 in February 2009.
