PCM boys basketball coach Tony Ford is entering his second season at the helm.
Ford had big shoes to fill after taking over the program last season when former longtime legendary head coach Fred Lorenson retired. In Ford’s first season the Mustangs went 10-13 overall and fell to Des Moines Christian in the second round of substate. After last season the Mustangs graduated two big body post players in Jake Jungling and Jake Wendt who combined for almost 500 points and 400 rebounds. Wendt finished his career fourth all time in rebounding and Ford will try to replace that production with a bit of a smaller lineup this season.
The Mustangs will bring back some three experienced guards who gave PCM significant offensive production last season in Gavin Van Gorp, Cutler VandeLune, and Kaleb DeVries. PCM will also return tall forward Alex Wendt who gave the Mustangs quality minutes off the bench last season along with guard Gavin Steenhoek who was the sixth man for most of last year. Coach Ford says there are a few things he wants to see his team work on this year so they can continue to improve.
“Shot selection, not holding the ball for more than a second, playing intense defense and knowing our role on defense and how we close out and rebound, those are all going to be extremely important. If we can execute on the basics, which is cliche that if you do the fundamentals well you’ll do good, but within the system we operate we have to do the little things really well this year.”
The Mustangs will open their regular season on December 3rd at West Marshall.
