The National Weather Service has recorded over 2.6 inches of rain in Newton so far this month, and that has delayed work on the interior of the new clubhouse being built at Westwood Golf Course. Newton City staff expected that work at the city owned golf course to begin this week. But Public Works Director Joe Grife says that phase is now projected to start the second week of December.
“It’s everything from the finished floor up. So the finished floor, interior walls, bathrooms, offices, kitchen, lighting.”
Before all of that can be done, the exterior of the clubhouse needs to be completed. Grife says the sheet metal on the outside of the building will start to go on this week. On October 21st, the Newton City Council approved Ball Team, Incorporated of Urbandale’s $692,000 base bid for the interior phase of this project. That bid was lower than four others submitted to the city, but was much higher than the $500,000 projected cost. Newton City Administrator Matt Mucker says there’s still $142,000 of project funding left. That money will go towards a built-in bar, window shades, furniture, and an outdoor patio. But to complete those items, Muckler believes additional bond revenue will probably be needed.
