The Norwalk bowling teams opened the season with dual wins on Monday, three girls wrestlers placed first in a home tournament and the Warrior girls basketball team improved to 2-0.

Bowlers defeat Knoxville

Norwalk opened the bowling season at Air Lanes Bowling Center in Des Moines with decisive wins over Knoxville. The Warrior boys won by 405 total pins, 2398 to 1993, led by Brytan Bassman’s two-game series of 435. The girls won by 308 pins, 2081 to 1773, led by Della White’s 285. Norwalk returns to Air Lanes on Monday, December 2, for a dual meet against Sigourney.

Girls Wrestling

The Norwalk girls wrestlers hosted a five-team tournament vs. Carlisle, Indianola, Saydel and Martensdale-St. Marys. There were no team scores on the night. Three Warriors won their bracket: Hannah Smith at 120 pounds, Kaylie Popiano at 130 and Katie Liedtke at 170. They combined to win all six of their matches, including five pins. 

Maya Wojtowicz placed second at 125 and Lizzie Reeves took second at 235, going 2-1 with two pins. Norwalk’s next meet is Saturday, December 7, at Ames.

Girls Basketball

The Class 4A fourth-ranked Norwalk girls basketball team used another big third quarter to win at ADM 57-35, improving to 2-0. The Warriors led 28-20 at halftime before outscoring the Tigers 24-6 in the third quarter. During Friday’s season opener vs. Urbandale, the Warriors won the third period 25-6 en route to a 24-point victory.

The sister combo of freshman Braylyn Birmingham and senior Bailey Birmingham led Norwalk with 22 and 21 points, respectively. Grace Linder hit a pair of treys for her six points and Ava Carlson added four. The Warriors will host Bondurant-Farrar in another non-conference game tonight at 7:30. The game will be streamed live on KNIA3, starting with pregame coverage at 7:15.
