Now that Thanksgiving has passed, Christmas decorations will be going up. Newton Fire Marshall Jacob Halferty encourages everyone to keep safety in mind, especially with outdoor light displays.
“Most problems with exterior Christmas decorations come with overloading electrical outlets. It would be smart to use just a few outlets on their own circuits for the lights you hang up on your house.”
The Newton Fire Marshall also recommends making sure you have the proper electric connections
“You want a properly rated exterior extension chord. Ones that are heavier gauge, at least 14 gauge and have a weather rating. Because if it gets too cold, some can start cracking and expose the wires.”
Halferty says make sure you have a good ladder to use and someone to hold it while putting up your outdoor Christmas lights.
