The Newton Boys and Girls Basketball teams travel to Grinnell tonight for a non-conference game. It will be the season opener for three of the four teams.
The Newton girls opened the season a week ago, Tuesday, December 26th, with a 57-30 home win over Chariton. The Cardinals had balanced scoring as senior Alex Riney had nine points, junior Tori White and freshmen Camryn Klein and Sophia Coady each had eight points, and senior Hailey Dickerson and sophomore Payton Curkuff both had seven points.
Last year, on November 28th, 2023, the Newton boys and girls basketball teams both lost at home to Grinnell. The Tigers’ girls have lost their two leading scorers from last season to graduation. Their third leading scorer from a year ago, junior Isabelle Holden, is back. She averaged just under five points per game last season. The Newton boys lost to Grinnell in overtime that night, falling 43-42. The Cardinals’ returning high scorer from that game is Senior Cade Bauer.. For Grinnell, returning Seniors Ryan Mcllrath had a team high nineteen points and Derek Doty had seven.
