The Newton boys and girls basketball teams each earned non-conference road wins Tuesday night, as both squads defeated Grinnell in a doubleheader heard live on the KRLS3 stream at KNIAKRLS.com.

The Cardinal girls improved to 2-0 by beating the Tigers 34-29. Newton led 7-3 at the end of the first quarter, 13-12 at halftime, and 26-22 heading into the fourth quarter. Junior Tori White had nine points for the Cardinals, while senior Hailey Dickerson had eight and sophomore Payton Carkhuff added seven. Newton head coach Jake Bennett noted that last year’s loss to Grinnell helped his squad stay poised to earn the win this season.

“Things were all over the place a little bit in terms of execution. The difference this year is we have girls who are more resilient and have been in that situation before, unlike last year. It was good to see them rally around each other and find a way to get a win.”

The Newton boys open the season at 1-0, after defeating Grinnell 49-31. The Cardinals scored the first eight points of the game and never trailed en route to the victory. The Cardinals led 18-6 at the end of the first quarter, 25-18 at halftime, and 39-20 after the third quarter. Junior Caden Klein led Newton with 14 points, while senior Landon Bozarth also reached double figures with 10 points.

The Cardinals basketball teams return to the court on Thursday,  hosting Marshalltown in a doubleheader that can be heard live on the KRLS3 stream. Pregame coverage will begin at 5:45 p.m., followed by tip-off of the girls game at 6 p.m.
