A strong defensive effort led the Central College women’s basketball team to a 70-57 win against Buena Vista University Wednesday night, while 19 offensive rebounds weren’t enough to prevent the men’s squad from falling to the Beavers 73-71.
The Dutch women (6-3, 1-1 American Rivers) held Buena Vista to 38.5% shooting from the field and 25% from three-point land, while forcing 16 steals and six blocks. In the second quarter, the Beavers scored four points and were held to 2-14 shooting. Leading Central in scoring was Samantha Scott, who had 18 points on 6-11 shooting from three. She added two rebounds and two steals. Abby Johnson scored 17 points while shooting 7-14 from the field and also grabbed six rebounds and two steals. Hannah Dau scored 13 points on 50% shooting while also adding a steal. Jasmyn Williams led the team with nine assists while also adding five steals. As a team Central shot 36% from the field, 29.7% from three-point range and 7-10 from the free throw line.
For the Dutch men’s team, Joshua Van Gorp led all scorers with 25 points and collected his eighth double-double of the season by adding 17 rebounds. Kaleb Brand scored 13 points on 4-7 shooting, while also dishing out 5 assists. Bradley Curren added 11 points and four assists, while Grant Uecker contributed 10 points, three assists, and six rebounds. As a team Central (5-3, 1-1 American Rivers) shot 41.5% from the field, and 28.6% from three-point range.
The Central basketball teams are back in conference action on Saturday, hosting Wartburg College in a doubleheader that can be heard live on 92.1 KRLS.
