The City of Newton is looking to save an estimated $800 per month by switching the cellphone carrier for police and fire employees. Newton City Administrator Matt Muckler says Administrative Services Manager Katrina Davis has been in discussions with the T-Mobile representative who works with police and fire cellular service. There’s a plan that would provide service and a new phone for $29.75 per month under a government contract. Over the next several weeks, Muckler says city staff will be working to transition to T-Mobile.
Under the city’s current contract, Muckler says Newton is paying about $2,090 per month. T-Mobile is quoting the city $1,285 per month in the new contract. Muckler notes the city would need to pay out any contracts left on phones with the previous carrier, but says the city would still be saving substantial money on the new plan.
