The Newton Boys and Girls Basketball teams hosted Marshalltown last night and both came away with decisive wins, as heard live on KRLS3.
The Newton girls defeated Marshalltown 41-15, while the Cardinals boys won 68-40.
The boys used a twenty-nine point third quarter to turn a 21-20 halftime deficit into a 49-32 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Multiple Cardinals hit three-point shots in that quarter. Newton Head Coach Jason Carter knew it was a matter of time before the team’s outside shooting came around.
“Shooting can be contagious. Cade knocked down three in a row and got us going. Once we saw a few go through the basket everybody seemed to gain confidence.”
Caden Klein led the Cardinals with nineteen points and Creighton Andrew added eleven. The Newton boys are now 2-0.
The Cardinal girls led 24-6 at halftime and Head Coach Jake Bennett was pleased to see the now 3-0 team continue to play their style of basketball throughout the game, even with the big lead.
“Offensively, we want to take care of the ball. Defensively, we want to work on our situational stuff. That was the message they heard going into the game and the same message at halftime.”
Payton Carkhuff was Newton’s high scorer with nine, while Hailey Dickerson added eight.
The Newton boys and girls basketball teams travel to Indianola tonight to open Little Hawkeye Conference play. Both games can be heard live on the KRLS3 stream. Pregame coverage will begin at 5:45 p.m., followed by the tip-off of the girls game at 6 p.m..
