In a defensive battle on Eagle Lane Thursday night, the Class 3A #9 PCM girls basketball team found enough offense to pull out a 41-32 victory over Class 2A #15 Pella Christian in a game heard live on 92.1 KRLS.

Both teams made offense hard to come by early in the contest, as the Mustangs and Eagles scored just five points combined in the first five and a half minutes of the game. Over the last two and a half minutes of the first quarter, PCM outscored Pella Christian 7-6 to grab a 10-8 lead at the end of the period. The strong defensive efforts continued to be a theme throughout the rest of the game, but the Mustangs did just enough to keep building their advantage over the Eagles. PCM grabbed a 21-18 lead at halftime, before pulling ahead 33-25 at the end of the third and outscoring Pella Christian 9-6 in the fourth quarter to secure the nine point win.

PCM freshman Libby Winters scored a game-high 16 points, while senior Addi Steenhoek contributed 13 and junior Tori Lindsay added 11 points in the win. Senior Faith Kacmarynski and sophomore Chloe Snyder led the Pella Christian offense on the night, with each recording nine points in the loss.

The Mustangs improved to 4-0 overall on the season, and return to the court tonight in a home doubleheader with the boys squad against Saydel. The girls game will start at 6 pm, and the boys game will follow a ceremony to honor the Mustangs’ 2004 Boys State Basketball Championship team that will take place in between games.

The Eagles fell to 2-2 overall on the winter, and they also return to the court tonight in a doubleheader on the road at Oskaloosa. Coverage of Pella Christian’s girls-boys doubleheader in Oskaloosa can be heard live on the KRLS2 stream, beginning with the Scooter’s Coffee Radio Pregame show at 5:45 pm, and tip-off of the girls game will follow at 6 pm.
