The Pella Christian boys basketball team knocked off Oskaloosa 59-42 last night, after the Indian girls rallied from a double-digit deficit to beat the P.C. girls 48-41 in a doubleheader heard live on KRLS2.
Oskaloosa scored the first bucket of the second quarter to tie the boys game at 15-15 before the Eagles ripped off a 12-0 run to take control. They led 34-20 at the half, but the Indians cut it to six late in the third quarter before Ben Van Wyngarden hit a three-pointer at the end of the third and Deacon Branderhorst drilled another early in the fourth to stretch the advantage back to double digits.
“We have some guys that can shoot it”, said head coach Marv Van Wyk. “Tuesday (against EBF) we didn’t shoot it well at all, but I told them that I believe in them and that I know they can shoot – don’t overthink it and keep shooting the ball. We were 4-for-21 on Tuesday and I know that we’re better shooters than that. We showed that tonight.”
The Eagles made seven three pointers, led by four from Branderhorst who led all scores with 20 points. Gilbert Flagel added 10 and Landon Fransman grabbed 10 rebounds. The Eagles are 2-0 and start Little Hawkeye Conference play 1-0. They’ll host PCM on Monday night.
In the girls game, Oskaloosa star Dasia Foster spent most of the first half on the bench after three first quarter fouls, and Pella Christian took advantage, building a 27-15 halftime lead.
Foster played the entire second half without committing another foul, and her dominance inside ignited the Indian comeback. They outscored the Eagles 12-4 in the third quarter to cut the deficit to four, then pulled away with a 21-10 fourth quarter. Foster finished with 19 points and 16 rebounds.
Pella Christian was led by Chloe Snyder with 16 points and Rachel Kacmarynski added 11 points and 11 boards. The Eagles drop to 2-3 with their third straight loss to a ranked opponent and they start LHC play 0-1. Up next is a road trip to Van Meter on Thursday night.
