It was a special night in Monroe Friday night as the PCM girls and boys basketball teams defeated Saydel in Heart of Iowa Conference matchups and the 2004 boys state champion team was honored between games for the 20 year anniversary.

The girls team defeated the Eagles with ease 60-30 to remain undefeated. The Mustangs went into half up 41-18 and didn’t look back as they maintained a large advantage throughout the second half even with their reserves in during the fourth quarter. PCM was led in scoring by Addsion Steenhoek who had 15 points and Tori Lindsay who had 12. However, nine different girls contributed to the scoring in the win. The PCM girls improve to 5-0 and will next compete on Tuesday at Perry.

In between games the 2004 PCM boys basketball team was honored for the 20th anniversary of winning the state championship. Many players from that team were in attendance along with several members of the coaching staff. There was a booth set up in the commons with the championship trophy and a video playing with highlights from that season. Included in attendance was star athlete Brandon Myers who went on to play football at the University of Iowa and had a seven year NFL career. Myers was a captain of the all-tournament team in 2004. Hear an interview with former PCM coach Fred Lorenson and Myers on an upcoming Lely Radio Sports Page segment.

In the varsity boys game the Mustangs pulled out a gritty 52-50 win over Sayel. PCM trailed by 11 points early in the second quarter, but fought back to go into halftime just down one. The Mustangs played intense defense and excelled offensively in the second half as they nursed a small advantage and were able to pull out the win in a game that came down to the wire. PCM Coach Tony Ford said he loved the home environment Friday night.

“The crowd was phenomenal. I love playing in our gym. I know some people want a bigger one but I love how we pack our gym and it gets super loud. I always feel like we get more points playing at home because of the energy it brings to us.”

The boys were led in scoring by Gavin Van Gorp who had 16. PCM improves to 1-1 overall and will next compete on Monday at Pella Christian.
