Central women’s basketball team loses to No. 2 ranked Wartburg
PELLA- Despite having a balanced scoring attack the Central College women’s basketball team fell at home to the No. 2 ranked Wartburg College 71-43.
“I saw a lot of fight from our women,” said coach Justin Weiland. “I was proud of our effort, and energy tonight. I really liked our effort on the defensive end.”
Everyone that played for Central scored in the game, as the team shot 32.9% from the field, and 18.8% from three-point land. The team scored 28 points in the paint and had 21 bench points.
“I loved our transition play today,” Weiland said. “We had some stagnant possessions in the half court, but I thought we improved in the second half and got much better looks. We want to be a balanced scoring team, but we need to keep improving”
The Dutch (6-4, 1-2 American Rivers) had a trio of players leading the team with six points from CeCe Moore (sophomore, Waterloo, West HS), Samantha Scott (senior, Davenport, North Scott HS) and Bailey Reding (junior, Grundy Center).
Moore was 3-5 shooting while also grabbing five rebounds, Scott shot 3-9 from the floor, and Reding was 2-3.
Gabby Moore (senior, Waterloo, West HS) scored five points, collected eight rebounds, and had two steals.
“That exactly what we want Gabby to do,” said Weiland. “She is one of our key defenders and we need her to rebound and play fast. We got to see her post up a couple times and she did a lot of good things for our team.
Hannah Dau (senior, Paullina, South O’Brien HS) also scored five points on 2-4 shooting while also collecting four rebounds and three assists. Jasmyn Williams (junior, Denver, Colo. Arvada West HS)scored four points while also dishing out three assists.

“I am proud of how the guys defended,” said coach Joe Steinkamp. “Sometimes you must win ugly games, and it was good for us to battle and win a game in the 60s when we didn’t shoot it great. We found a way to win and that exciting.”

Freshmen show growth for Dutch women’s wrestling squad
STORM LAKE — Some freshmen on the Central College women’s wrestling team secured their first collegiate victories at the Buena Vista Open Saturday.
The Dutch had six wrestlers in action at the 13-team tournament.
“This tournament was a slight turnaround for us,” coach Paige Baynes said. “Some women who haven’t been able to get a win were able to get one. The wrestling overall is starting to improve.”
The top finisher for the Dutch was Selena Snell (sophomore, Kansas City, Mo., University Academy) at 207 pounds, winning two of her five round-robin matches to finish fourth.
Carolina Vargas (freshman, Cypress, Texas, Bridgeland HS), took fifth at 124 pounds after going 2-2 on the day.
“Carolina was very dominant and coachable throughout the entire day,” Baynes said “I think we finally found what weight class works for her and something was able to click for her.”
Classmate Kate Richards (freshman, Solon) also made it to the fifth-place match at 117 pounds but lost her final match to take sixth. Another freshmen, Macy Litherland (freshman, Geneseo, Ill.), won by fall in the consolation final of the 160-pound bracket.
“I’m super proud of the women,” Baynes said. “But we still have some work to do when we get back.”
Central closes out the first semester with a 7 p.m. dual next Friday at Cornell College.
